Oftentimes, our perception of art can be constrained into very narrow ideas of art styles and practices. Perhaps you would have never thought that you could pick up a hair clip and water bottle to create a puppet skit with these ready-made objects. Or perhaps you haven’t considered how dancing reconnected your physical self with your emotional innerworld. That’s the beauty of Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s Arts Day: it provides a safe space to explore and expand your definitions of art and how you express yourself. 

On October 26, Arts Day began with a Junior Â鶹ÊÓƵ Mic to get everyone in the creative mood. Then, more than 20 arts professionals from various artistic practices hosted various workshops for our Grades 7 to 10 students. The workshops gave students an introduction to the art form and a chance to try it out. Students could choose two workshops from a diverse list,  including commercial photography, dance, improv comedy, hand lettering, circus skills and zombie makeup – just to name a few.

Later in the afternoon, students enjoyed a musical performance by the Sultans of String in the gym. We hope that Arts Day gave the students a chance to explore their artistic side and perhaps learn about a new art form that they will enjoy.
